A few basic tips to make your seaside vacation healthy and safe. We suggest how to take care of yourself in the water and on the beach!
It may seem that a wide, sandy beach doesn't have many dangers, but every year lifeguards have a lot of work. Sunburns, headaches, fatigue – these are just some of the ailments we may experience after a day on the beach. To prevent this, we present a guide with some ironclad rules to make your seaside holidays full of satisfaction!
Proper hydration is important wherever we are, but during sunbathing it is absolutely essential not to forget it. When going to the beach, an appropriate amount of water should be in your backpack or bag – it's also worth stocking up on cold drinks to cool your body down a bit more. You should drink about 2 liters of water every day, and on hot days even 1 liter more. Some snacks can also help with hydration, e.g., watermelon, cucumbers, tomatoes, or peppers. Symptoms of dehydration include weakness, headaches and dizziness, and muscle tremors.
Sunscreen is another must-have in your beach bag. It's worth using SPF cream daily, but during long exposure to the sun not using it threatens our health. Sunscreen not only protects us from excessive tanning but, above all, from harmful UV rays, skin aging, skin diseases, and serious sunburns. It is best to use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. The layer of cream should be refreshed every two hours and after every swim in the sea.
Wearing swimwear all day can cause unpleasant ailments. It's worth bringing a swimsuit or clothes to change into to the beach. This helps prevent infections.
Even the best swimmers can be surprised by something while swimming in the sea. Using guarded beaches is the safest option for spending time at the water. You should always follow the lifeguards' instructions and refrain from swimming if a red flag is hoisted. As many as 20% of drowning cases involve people under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Other common causes include accidents during sailing and diving, fatigue, exhaustion, and ignoring safety rules.
Absolutely never enter the water under the influence of alcohol. Most accidents happen to people who have consumed alcohol beforehand. Drinking alcohol before swimming puts yourself and others at risk.
You should also not enter the water directly after prolonged sunbathing. Our body is warmed up, and the water in the Baltic is cold. It is best to cool down in the shade for a while, then gradually enter the water to avoid thermal shock or heat stroke.
If you notice someone in the water needing help, you must immediately notify the lifeguard. If you are on a guarded beach, do not attempt personal rescue attempts on your own, as you then also endanger your own life. Trained professionals will know better how to help others and will do it more efficiently.
Before entering the beach, you should familiarize yourself with the bathing area's regulations. There you will find all the necessary information about water conditions – its temperature, clarity, and suitability for swimming. The information is continuously updated.
During family trips, most attention should be paid to the youngest. Children cannot swim alone, even near the shore! You must watch the little ones not only in the water – beaches are often crowded, and it is easy to get lost. It is worth indicating a landmark to the child so they can find their way if necessary. You can place your towel next to a distinctive stone, pier, or tree. A good idea is also to bring a helium balloon or a flag – they will definitely be visible!
Always keep safety in mind when heading to the beach. These few tips are some of the basic rules that will allow for a blissful rest without unpleasant surprises. Better safe than sorry!
